The Impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on Academic Integrity: Challenges for September 2024

The global academic community discuss the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies on academic integrity. With the introduction of AI in educational processes, the number of violations has increased, which requires a comprehensive review of existing approaches to academic ethics. Today, students can use AI tools to automatically write essays, complete coursework and theses, which threatens the authenticity of their work. According to research, many students do not realize all the consequences of using AI in academic tasks, which leads to violations of the norms of honest learning.

At the International Conference on Academic Integrity and Digital Technologies, held in New York in September 2024, experts from different countries discussed how changing assessment and teaching methods can minimize the impact of AI on academic standards. New formats of knowledge assessments were proposed, such as individual projects, oral exams, and more active use of programs to check the originality of texts. The conference also discussed ways to modernize curricula to better integrate digital technologies, which will make the educational process more transparent and fair.

AI, when used responsibly, has great potential to improve the educational process. For example, it can help students master complex topics faster, generate ideas, and develop better projects. However, there is a need to create strict rules for the use of AI in educational institutions to prevent abuse.

At StrikePlagiarism.com, we understand the importance of these issues and offer solutions that help educational institutions adapt to new challenges. Our systems not only detect plagiarism, but also provide tools for analyzing texts created with AI. This allows us to maintain a high level of academic integrity and prevent misconduct.

How we can help: Our solutions for checking texts for originality help to detect any form of academic misconduct, including those related to the use of AI. These tools ensure high accuracy and compliance with academic integrity standards.

New approaches to academic integrity in the context of AI

International educational forums are actively discussing issues related to the use of AI in the academic environment. With the increasing number of students using AI to automate their academic assignments, many universities are facing problems maintaining academic integrity. AI tools allow students to automate the process of writing texts, which complicates the task of teachers to identify violations.

At the European Forum on Academic Ethics and Innovation, held in Berlin in September 2024, new methods for combating violations of academic integrity were discussed. One of the key decisions was the proposal to introduce more individualized oral exams and project assignments that will allow teachers to assess the real knowledge of students, rather than the results obtained using AI. It was also proposed to increase the use of software solutions for analyzing texts created using AI and to introduce stricter standards for checking originality.

AI can play both a positive and a negative role in education. When used correctly, it can improve the quality of education by helping students retain content and develop critical thinking. However, without strict controls and ethical standards, its use can undermine trust in the education system.

New capabilities AI report

We decided to significantly improve the capabilities of our similarity report by separating the similarity report from the AI report and the grammar check report.
From now on, all these reports are pre-written within one report, but in different tabs, so the user can download a separate report on plagiarism, AI or grammar in PDF format.

We also implemented a new AI tool - the AI content indicator. This indicator allows the supervisor to mark in the report only the text with the highest AI probability level. The threshold value for the AI Indicator can be set by default by the system administrator, however, each teacher can change it if necessary.

Attending Open Science Forum UOSF2024

Our team has attended the Ukrainian Open Science Forum UOSF2024 organized by EURODOC and Lviv Polytechnic University.
At the forum moderated by Mr. Andriy Butenko the Head of NAQA (National Agency for Higher Education Quality Assurance of Ukraine) we could share our worries and ideas related to AI-plagiarism, AI misuse in student and scientific papers, potential risks for quality of education and science, as well as our technological experience in detection of an AI-generated text in various languages.

Despite the availability of technological solutions for detecting AI-generated text in many languages, if no policies and actions are taken by the universities, the use of AI tools will turn into an uncontrolled and in some environments even a toxic process.
It was interesting to know more details about a new academic integrity law that is going to be adopted in a near few months in Ukraine which will also embrace the subject of artificial intelligence and more effective legislative instruments against very popular in Ukraine, the UK, Poland, and many other countries of Europe - paper mills, as mentioned by Mr. Ivan Nazarov Deputy Chairman of NAQA. The proposed solution will make paper mills illegal and, in the meantime, the financial penalties applied.

Ukraine is also discussing whether the lustration of plagiators can help in the situation when around 70% of court judges have PhD and many of them are absolutely negative to the idea of canceling the academic degree for plagiarism. Perhaps, lustration may help to minimize the negative influence of "powerful" plagiators, but only a complex approach can help in this case, including demotivating factors and eliminating social benefits.
